If you type a lot or do the same thing repetatively, it might be RSI rather than Carpal Tunnel.
see a doctor.

I get RSI problems occasionally. I just do something else for a while. Wood working really helps a lot.

When I had carpal tunnel, the symptoms were: numbness in the fingers, me being unable to do up my shirt buttons, but no pain at all, just numbness.

If you die, that's a strong sign.

You would be looking and numbness and pain affecting all your hand bar your wee finger and some of the 4th finger (the one you'd put a ring on)
Your thumb may feel weak as well....
But the best way to know would be to go to a Doctor :p

Don't we all have corpral tunnels ? ...... Ok ..... Carpal ?
porsch1909
09-16-2005, 05:54 PM
Your carpal tunnel is :
the space between the carpal bones of the wrist and the connective tissue
Carpal tunnel syndrome is :
Painful disorder of wrist and hand due to compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel
As clear as mud :p

Calling it RSI, while not entirely accurate, was totaly clear and understandable to anyone not sniffing glue.
Most people still know CTS as RSI.

Actually the two are different. CTS is a long term nerve disorder. RSI is usually temporary muscle fatigue and nerve trauma.

Of course they are different, just like coke and pepsi are. Or rather just like diet coke and diet pepsi (both suck).
However we're still talking about exactly the same injury (when in relation to computer use), that is the repetitive motion of the hands in unnatural positions that typing and mousing force upon a user.
Basically it was changed from an injury to a syndrome. Why they didn't call it RSS - Repetitive Strain Syndrome is a bit of a mystery, it would have saved a lot of time.

Mousing also can affect users in a different way if they rest their wrists on the work surface for a little more support.
The slight pressure on the wrist can compress the blood vessels in the wrist and cause numbness and fatigue in the mousing hand as adequate bloodflow just isn't happening.
This isn't covered by RIS or CTS.

Carpal tunnel syndrome deals only with the carpal tunnel as pointed out by porshe1909.
Repetitive stress injury could be due to a number of causes, including cramps, calcification of joints and even chemical imbalances like uric acid crystals in the joints that are aggravated by repetitive use.
Bottom line is have a doctor look at it. Getting medical advice from this forum is like trying to get a crepe suzette at Taco Bell.
