I have a modem/router which is connected to my PC via a network cable. The router works perfectly well and has been working for ages.

However I've recently been getting an error where the network icon will appear along with the message "A network cable is unplugged" then the icon will dissappear, and the network is up again.

Last time I got this for about a week then the internet just refused to work alltogether. I thought the network section of my motherboard had packed up, so I tried a PCI Network Card that I had lying around, and had no problems since.

Until now that is. I bought a new motherboard and power supply as I was having problems before. Network worked fine for about 2 days, then up comes that fateful error again "A network cable is unplugged".

For the record - if I try and plug my laptop into the router it works fine, its just with my PC that's the problem

So tonight I'll probably go home and reinstall the seperate network card I still have. But I can't help but be annoyed about this.

Replace the cable. One of the wires in the connectors is getting weak and not making contact properly.

Physical layer would certainly be the first thing to look at but it's not a certainly by any means. Try replacing the cable but unless you have a spare you might want to play around with line speed and duplexing on the NIC's as well. Try another port on your switch if you have one. Swap if you don't.
