I have just bought a CD Writer, it is a Yamaha SCSI. The problem is that it is taking the I: drive slot which is where my DVD player was which is now J:

This is messing up some games - most are OK but Tiberium Sun only looks at the first CD - which would probably be OK except that I do not have a sound connector to the Sound Card for the writer.

I have gotten over the problem by removing the writer in a new Windows 98 configuration but that is a pain as I have to select it each time I boot.

Is there any way I could either re-assign the drive letters (tried it from control panel but cannot get them to change only move.

I suppose I could but a SCSI DVD and have some control over which drive becomes which but the bank account manager said 'NO WAY - DON'T EVEN THINK OF THAT' so I am not.

first, you said you removed the writer in win98 configuration - im not exactly sure what you did, but put it back in, or enable it. then, rightclick My Computer and choose 'properties' then go to the Device Manager tab on the window that pops up. expand the CD ROM DRIVES tree and select(click on) your cd writer and click the 'properties' button. click on the SETTINGS tab on the window that pops up and at the bottom of that window you will see a couple lines that say 'start drive letter' and 'end drive letter' with drop down boxes next to them. change them both to the letter you want your cd writer to be, like X or P or something. then, when you restart windows, your writer will have the new letter assignment, and everything else should go back to the letters they had before you added the writer.

It's just a thought, but couldn't you just uninstall the games and reinstall them from the DVD player at it's new drive letter? Although, I do agree that setting both letters in the properties tab to the same letter should work as well.

i think it would be a big pain in the **** to have to uninstall and reinstall all the games on your comp.... especially if you have a lot. plus, with some games when you reinstall it erases all your old saved games too....

I adjusted the drive letters as drdeath had said and that worked fine - thanks very much. I had played with those settings before but had not quite done it and so both drives moved.

I had reloaded one of the games but it had no effect - some games just look for the first drive so it had no effect.

Thanks again,

Jeff
