Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : My Power Supply exploded!!!
I just bought a new case to go with my new atx BH6 motherboard. I plugged everything in, and set everything up. When I turned on the power, there was this strage whirring/hissing sound, and then within 5 seconds, smoke started coming out of the computer!!!!! I turned it off as soon as possible, and learned that the wires leading from my power supply had burnt, and all the plastic had been melted off of them. I tested all of the hardware in the system on one of my other motherboards, and it all works fine, but I'm still really pissed off. Why did the power supply do that?!?!
PS
the first few times I tried to turn on the power nothing happened, I made sure everything was in the right place, tried again, and it caught fire!!

BMF,
If it is wires that lead to a harddrive or the motherboard that melted then you have a SHORT with that componant. If the wires leading into the PS melted then you have a short inside the PS. so when I read what you said the wires leading from my power supply had burnt It makes me belive that you had something hooked up wrong or plugged in backwards or the motherboard was grounded/shorted.
Hope you didnt waste the motherboard with the powersupply /forum/frown.gif

I've done that by just plugging in the floppy power supply one pin off. Hopefully that's all it was.
Yes, it was the wire that went from the power supply to the floppy drive (the tiny 4 pin wire). It's the only one that's burn, so I must have plugged it in wrong.
****, that freaked me out though.
Mntsnow,
The motherboard seems fine, I ran it on another machine and it worked ok.

Out of curiosity.. How do you plug the power supply into a floppy drive incorrectly? The plugs are beveled. Wouldn't you have to force it in to get it in wrong?
Cardmagic, well I didn't plug it in the wrong way, I plugged it in one prong off. so that only 3 of the 4 prongs were inserted, I know, pretty dumb. . .
Ok, everything is now set up and is running fine, except for one (possibly major) problem: when I plug the power connector into my floppy (properly this time), the computer wont start, I have to clear the BIOS before it will. I start the computer with the power to the floppy unplugged and it loads fine. I know the floppy drive works because I tested it in my other system, what could it be. Also, I still have the floppy drive's 34 pin cable connected to the motherboard, so I know that's not the problem, it's definitely the power. .. hmmm. . .
any suggestions???

sounds like you grounded out the power to the disk drive, I dont know how you would fix that on a puter exept get a new power supply, in cars you just change the fuse |)

You can get an adapter that will fit onto one of your molex connections (like the HD takes) and has a floppy power connector on the other end.
I will say for the safety of your MB and other components that it might be safer to get a new PS instead.
