I've got the 6.4 Quantum KAplus 7200 rpm. Mine doesn't make any high pitched noises. It sounds more like a SCSI than and IDE. I love mine and wouldn't trade it for the world. Get a hold of Quantum Tech support and see what they say. Doesn't sound normal to me.

Hi all...

I was just wondering if anyone out there has experienced some really high-pitched squeals with their Quantum fireball plus KA drives. I have the 7200rpm 18.2 gig drive, and while it runs great, i'm getting headaches from the squealing. I'm going to try to add a fan and move the case somewhere else so that it doesn't bother me as much, but i was wondering if this was normal. I brought the HD back to the place I bought it, and, just like when you bring a car into the shop because of a noise, it didn't do what it should.

Any help is appreciated!

Have you checked the case maybe the hard drive is vibrating and causing somthing to rub together. I have a Quantum big foot 12 gig and there is no squealing noise in fact the only noise I get is the clicking sound when it accesses. Try removing the hard drive from the case and hook it up to see if you still get the noise. I hope you find the problem..

Thanks for the help guys. I've run all the usual tests - check mounting, vibration in case, etc. I've talked to Quantum support and they told me to send it in because this just ain't right. So, if anyone else is having these troubles, I definitely recommend looking into a warranty replacement. The headaches aren't worth it. Thanks again tho!
