This is my second Maxtor 8.4 GB HD to die on me in 6 months. The first time it happened Maxtor had to send me a new drive and now its happened again. The bios will not see the drive anymore. There are no symptoms at all leading up to this. Last night I was on it with no problem and this morning its dead! The first time I thought it was the controller but I put a different HD in the machine and it was fine. I read that some WD drives are having this problem and there is a recall on certain drives. Would not be surprised if Maxtor is having the same problem. In the meantime I just purchased a fujitsu and hopefully will have better luck. Any one else with a bad HD experience I would like to know. Thanks

Recently had a Maxtor 8.4G at my work go with many bad sectors. It was only 6 months old.
We're an OEM system builder in Iowa, and we use only IBM hard drives in our high end machines, Fujitsu in the rest. Do not have problems with either. We have been using this system for years, and no problems.
I've had excellent luck with Maxtor drives. I would call them & explain the problem, (calmly, getting belligerent over the phone usually gets you nowhere), and request a different model. They will most likely send you a larger drive.
BTW, before calling for RMA, have you tried the drive in another machine, just in case?
Hmmm, now I wonder about my own post, bios or virus?
Hope we get to the bottom of this soon!
I got thru a while ago and just have to find a suitable box now. Code E03 is a communication error. Wonder what size the replacement will be?

I've had to LLF this here Maxtor 8.4 GB HDD twice so far. And had to re-install Win98 about 12 times due to bad sectors.
But I haven't had 1 problem since I switched to Linux.
(Knock on wood.)

I tried putting the first bad drive into another machine and it was definately the drive. I did not do that with this one because the symptoms are the same. I ran the Maxtor diagnostics after booting from a disk and it told me to call a CSR for a replacement. My fujitsu should come today so after its installed, I will call Maxtor and see if they can send me a different model. Its just a pain reloading all that software. I got half way through with Quake 2 and now I have to start all over again!!
Fishboy, I got code EO3 on the drive that is under 3 years old, and Maxtor's CSR system was down when I called about 10 minutes ago. Hope you have better luck!
