System Slow Down

I have been experiencing a bizarre system slow down from time to time. Its most noticable in games, and graphic intensive programs, and its very aggrevating. Usually, the system takes forever to draw anyting when this happens. Then, after a few seconds, its all back to normal. What could be causing this, and how do I fix it? I'm running a K6-266, 64MB, and an ATI All-In-Wonder Pro card. Thanks.
