"Ping" is a common term given to the time in milliseconds for a signal from your modem to reach another server, and be sent back. It's mainly important for gauging speed in online gaming, where milliseconds matter.
To ping something, go to "Start", "Programs" "DOS Prompt", and type: ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx <enter>, where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the server that you want to gauge the time in milliseconds it takes for a signal to make a round trip.
There are other options for the ping command available, to get a list, type: ping /? at the DOS prompt.
