I about to embark on building another new system and was looking for some advice on motherboards. I’ve decided to go with AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ CPU and was thinking about using one of the Gigabyte MOBOs. I noticed that one I was looking at is compatible with the dual core processor but requires a BIOS update. My question is, will the system startup with a dual core processor installed before the BIOS upgrade can be installed? I presume that it can, because it would be difficult to install the BIOS upgrade without a O/S installed and I would need a functioning CPU for that.. Kind of catch 22…

Couldn't you use floopies to run the bios flash. Granted Floppies are not the best thing to flash with. All you should need is the new Bios itself, the flash program that is DOS based, and a DOS boot disk.

The CPU should function as a single core before the BIOS flash.
