Hi!

I have a really weard problem! When I'm surfing the web, my computer frezes for a couple of seconds when im pressing for instance the submit button or tabbing trough a site just like this for submitting a message. I haven’t noticed it while doing other stuff, it’s just while im on the net. I have looked for IRQ conflicts and memory conflics but I haven’t found anything.

Maybe it’s some of my hardware that just don’t like working together. Here’s what I have:

ASUS P2B mainboard with the 1010 bios (latest)
PIII 450 O/C 512
Creative Labs TNT2 ULTRA 32MB AGP (latest bios and drivers)
SB Live! (Live Ware 2.1)
Adaptec 2940 U2W scsi adapter with latest bios 2.20
3C905 TX PCI network card
2 X 9.1GB IBM SCSI HD (LVD)
Pioneer 6x DVD SCSI (ultra wide)
Plextor 40x (scsi ultra wide)
Plextor 8/2/20 CDRW (scsi Ultra Wide)
Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer USB
Logitech Quick Cam Home (USB)
Logitech Wingman Formula Force USB Wheel
Microsoft Force feedback Sidewinder pro (not USB)
Epson Stylus Color 600 printer

Please let me know if you know that any of these products might be causing this.

Thanks!

Have you tried using a different browser?
Do you have any memory managers resident on your computer? What virus scans are you using?
It sounds like software to me...

But as for hardware...
I've got SBLive!, IBM SCSI, Pioneer 6X, Plextor 4220 and have seen no such trouble with this combination.

Hi Jeana!

Thanks for answering, I stared thinking when you wrote what virus scanner did I use?? Well, none. So I installed Network Associates Dr.Solomon and scanned my computer. I had A LOT of files infected by the win95/CIH virus. I removed them and thought that the problem was gone, but it wasn’t. I only have 3 memory resident programs when I boot windows but I don’t think that could be the problem since I have 400 MB of RAM.

I will try to install Netscape and see if anything changes!

Thanks!

I have Norton Utilities 2000 installed. I ran a system check with that and it found that I have a memory problem. I ran it several times and it comes back with different memory areas. I then removed one of my memory chips and ran the check and it worked fine. I then replaced one of the chips with the one that I thought was faulty and it was still OK??? I changed place on all my memory chips. I found out that it could only find problems with my memory when all 3 of my chips is installed???

Is Norton Utilities ****?

Please be aware that the CIH may have done some considerable damage to your harddrive. CIH is a bad one.

I hope this is not the case with you, but in any case, please check this out thoroughly.

Here's some links for you to read - I don't have any real world experience with CIH, but others here have and may be able to further clarify if the problems you are experiencing may be a result of this virus.

Good luck!

Hi Socialgal!

Thanks for the Links. I read them through and it seems that I owe a lot to Jeana. If I had that virus on the 26th I would have been in big sh/% :----) it can delete files from the hard drive and destroy your flash bios but only on that date. I know for a fact that I didn’t have the virus then because I reinstalled my computer 1 week ago using format C: /U

Collision! I really appreciate you trying to help me. Now that I looked on my chips I noticed that all 3 of them are different brands, does it matter? Here’s what it says on my memory chips in DETAIL:

This is the first chip

SEC Korea 837
KM48S8030BT-GL
2TG332BB

This is the second chip

LGS Korea
GM72V66841ET7K
9929AA1
On the sides of this chip it is printed PCSDRAM – REV1.0 and 16M x 64 /72 SDRAM
There is a sticker saying: GMM26418233ENT
G-7K 93028A
PC100 – 222-620

The last chip:

MTEC TBS6408B4E-8
9906BM

Maybe these 3 chips don’t work well together. I have them set with the longest latency and delay in the BIOS since I am overklocking. My mainboard is running at 112Mhz. My mainboard supports up to 768 MB of ram and can use sizes from 8 to 256MB

Thanks a lot guys!

I installed Windows 2000 RC2, to see if it went better there, and it did. The things I was exeriancing in explorer is gone, I find this verry strange since I have 6 resources using IRQ 9? Still it works perfectly. Does anyone know of another program than Norton Utilites 2000 that can look for defective memory simms?

I have tried norton utilities on several systems. I don't like it at all. The speed disk is pretty cool because it will put your virtual memory on the edge of the disk. The crash guard kept finding progs that crashed on my computer. every time it was one of them!!! How does a program that finds crashed programs keep crashing???? Peter Norton is off his rocker.... (my opinion only)

Hey Zulan, you make me feel as if I actually did something! /forum/smile.gif

Now with the new browser and with a virus-free computer, do you still see the strange freeze?

Is it possible that rather than the actual RAM being faulty, one of your memory slots is bad?

I also advise that you be wary about Norton Utilities... I've also had the experience that it causes many! many! more crashes than it "prevents". In fact, since we removed it from our office computers they have not crashed at all!

does this only happen when browsing or could it be at other times?? If you have MS off ice turn off Find Fast as this will cause the computer to freeze for a few seconds every so often.

A CD in the drive or a blank CDR in the write drive will cause this to happen sometimes too.

Thanks for all your replies, I really appreciate it!

Scfarley!

Maybe your right, I uninstalled the program but it didn't help regarding my problem.

Jeana!

Well, in my opinion you did do something. I'm grateful that you brought up the idea of antivirus programs.

I installed Netscape and the problem isn't there, so it's only in explorer 5.0 with all the patches downloaded from the Microsoft update site. I could use Netscape but the problem bugs me. I don't think it's my memory slots because I tested them all with only 2 memory chips to see if that was the case, but all slots passed Norton Utilities tests, and as I said, I took your advice regarding NU and uninstalled it.

Mbarb!

It only happens when browsing as far as I know. I have turned off Find Fast because I knew of the performance it steals.

Smokin1!

It's true what you say about the cds, and that is very similar to my problem only it happens when there is no cd in either of my 3 cd players and the freeze is a lot longer.
