I have recently purchased a Turtle Beach Montego A3dxstream PCI sound card for my system. In the online FAQ at Turtle Beach, there is mention of problems with using ANY PCI sound card with an AGP graphics card on a motherboard using the Via MVP3 chipset. On their recomendation, I D/l and installed all of the new drivers for the chipset from Via. I still had problems with system crashes whenever Windows would try to display a window and at the same time play a .wav file that was associated with the window. No messages, blue screen, etc., just a completely frozen system. I then decided to flash the latest BIOS for my motherboard (FIC VA503+ ver 1.1a). No help. I have removed the card from my system and returned to stability. I would, however, like to get it working properly if possible because when it works, it sounds GREAT!!

Has anyone been down this road before. Does anyone have more info on the specifics of the problem? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Interesting, because I installed that sound card a while back on an FIC MB which has the ALI chipset and I encountered system crashes with WIN also and it was only accessable in safe mode. (There were no conflicts)

Once I removed the card all the problems disappeared. I replaced it with a SB PCI 64 and all is well.

Needless to say, I still have that sound card and have thought about trying it in my system which is VIA chipset.

Perhaps I should try the SB 64 PCI!!
I think the A3d is awesome though and really want to get it working if possible. What are the specifics of your system? Mine are as follows:

AMD K62 300
FIC VA503+ ver 1.1a (Via MVP3)
64 meg PC100
Stealth 3D 4000 AGP
Helios Voodoo PCI

One thing I can tell you for sure, since I have two of those 503+ boards, you better not be trying to put any PCI card in the slot right next to the AGP slot.

I use a Creative Ensoniq Audio PCI in the 503+ without trouble.

I have had my Voodoo card in the slot next to the AGP for quite a while now with no noticeable problems. Can you explain further?

I installed the card, but was very careful to remove all previous drivers and software regarding the Live! and all is well. It sounds very nice and is comparable to the Live! if not better. My ears are hearing more bass.

I'm running WIN98SE and noticed that there were two less 'Please insert the WIN98 Disk into the Drive' messages before the install was complete compared to the install on WIN98.

I've got it in the fourth of five PCI slots.

Well after talking to Turtle Beach Tech Support (Yes an actual person), I am beginning to think that the conflict lies with something other than my Mb. According to them, the newest Via drivers have taken care of the problem with chipset incompatibility. I have moved the card to Slot 1 under their advise which ensures that it automatically gets IRQ5 for the Soundblaster Emulation driver. All seems to be great as far as resource allocation goes but it still hangs under the same circumstances (albeit a fraction of a second later). I am now d/ling McAffee's crash protection utility to see if that will lend any insight as to what the conflict is. Stay Tuned!!!

kjgee -

Just for kicks, I think I'll try installing that Montego into my system tonight if I have time and see how it goes.

AMD K6-2 400 @450
Soyo 5EMA
64M EDO (ssshhhh-it's temporary)
CL 32M TNT2 AGP
SB Live! Value

I have a Shuttle Hot 591p and you want to talk about lockups.I have tried a ESS-SOLO
and no matter what I've tried it locked up.I then thought well how about a SCSI SB ISA card.Negative, recieved the same lockups I then tried a Aztech ISA SB compatiable. Not likely,I've come to the conclusion it doesn't like my Stealth 220 PCI card. And I'm not using the AGP slot right now I've played with every IRQ,Memory and port setting in windows and the Bios with no luck.If not for the lockups the Mboard itself would be great
I was running a K6-2 300 at 400 with nary a hitch or glitch.I've had it I just ran out to local supplier and bought a 300a with a new Mboard.Good luck.
