I read this article in the WSJ on Friday, about the so-called "Phonehackers" ring... anyway, I thought it was pretty interesting.

"Fascinating," I say, trying to sound as much like Spock as possible.

This is a rather old case and I suppose that the equipment has vastly improved. Do not think for a minute that other agencies like the N$A are not miles ahead of the game. Just like the HST, if turned around, can read a newspaper on earth, these agncies ahve mega systems and nodes in every city and pretty much have a handle on what informatione travels over the internet.

"He asked for Washington’s permission to intercept the impulses that traveled along Mr. Cantrell’s phone line as he was using his computer and modem.
“It’s one of the hardest techniques to get approved, partly because it’s so intrusive,” says Mr. Morris, who spent the next month or so consulting with federal authorities."

I do not think that certain agencies even bother to get permission. And I think it is safe to say that there are certain keywords that can get you on some monitoring lists.

Loose lips sink ships.

Yes,verrry interesting!I know some people think the US Gov't. may eventually use "Orwellian" tactics in the fight against "Hackers/Crackers".But,their power to do so will be restrained by our type of government.Since the Net is totally global, my fear is unrestrained foreign governments/groups/mafias/radicals/etc. succeeding in scrambling/pillferring/destroying our national business and government databases.....It's going to be a verrry interesting new millenium!

We're working on it, citizen.
Do you think any self-respecting government will allow the US to do this to their privileged communications? No sir!
