I have a Amptron 585B and when attempting to get the modem going it wants to put it on the LPT (printer) port. Will it work this way? I know it cant put it on the com port because I have a serial mouse plugged in and the board only has 1 com port.

If you run Add New Hardware and let WIN find it, it should find the modem's COM port. If it's a jumpered modem, make sure the jumpers are set for COM2

Susan:
Well I tried that and it wants to put it on Com Port 1 which is already in use. This is a onboard PCI modem, HSP K56 flex . Also I am using 95 B and it has no drivers for anything other than 28.8 modem. When I try and install the driver using windows it will not find the drivers on the CD. This is the closest I have come to getting it to work. I have been fiddling with this board for over a month trying getting it to go.

It kinda sounds like what I went through getting my brother's fiancee's modem to work. Try this... Let Windows install it under COM1. Then go into System Properties, under the Device Manager tab. Highlight the modem (Probably has an "!"), hit properties, and choose the resource tab. Uncheck "Automatic Settings." Then highlight "Interrupt Request," and hit "Change Setting." Change it from 4 to 10 or 12 if they're free(both have worked for me.) Okay everything and shut down. Don't just reboot, actually shut down for a few seconds or so. Fire it up and hope for the best. I hope this helped a bit. Good luck with it.

Hi Bleep, I'm having similar problems with an old nic card- it wants to go only on irq 3, so I cant get the modem to work either...unless I have a ps2 mouse which the old box doesnt have.
Are you sure your machine only has one com port? Run Add Hardware wizard and put a second port there (this is 95b we're talking about?). If one doesnt show up- do it again but this time when the second screen comes up choose No- dont let windows search for it- from the next screen choose ports...if that doesnt work you may have to pull all the cards except video (& ram) and let windows detect them one at a time...This has something to do with the way plug and play assigns resources...if theyre already divied out you may have to reshuffle the deck (start over). I'm sure there is a way to do it otherwise, but if you pull all the cards out and let windows assign irq and ports again, that will work.

Sorry Bleep, I didnt explain that well...Bios detects com ports and enables them for both internal use and external use.
Windows enables com ports for internal use only ( I think thats right ) To get a modem thats jumpered for com 2 to work, you have to turn it off in bios but turn it on in windows.
That turns off the external use of the comport but the modem is using it internally.
I think this is called a virtual com port? Thats what I had to do to get my pci modem to work- it had to go on a non-existant com port...com 5
Hope that didnt muddy the waters.

Ok Good advice all. Eli: I will try your suggestions I have been thinking about trying that but really did not know how .
As to the other suggestions this is good advice but the prob is the mainboard only has one FIFO and it is being used by the serial mouse. This is a intergrated board with sound, video, modem, all on the board so cant pull the cards and disabeling them only gives me the same results when i re-inable them. No boot prob's If I disable com1 in the bios I will have no mouse.
Thanks all for the replys.

Ah I see, onboard everything, dont have much expiriance with that yet, was taught to run away screaming if a puter had onboard stuff.
Well you should still be able to enable a com port 2 if only in windows and not on the hardware?
Try that- run add hardware wiz and dont let windows detect it (the board only has one serial port you say) See if that helps.
If not better ask someone on the board with more knowledge than I.

Bleep -
Sounds to me like you have a winmodem. They need to be installed using the software that came with it and the software will make a COM port for it.
Do you have any documentation or driver disks that came with the MB? If you do, search through the disk and find a subdirectory for modem or possibly something that says modem/HSP/port. Then run the setup program for it.

Susan:
GREAT /forum/smile.gif advice. Got the modem up on Com5 which is where all the other pci modems I have used work on. What I did was go to systems - device manager- took out 2 PCI devices hit refresh a couple of times-when it asked for the disk. searched the disk and got a modem install prog ran it and worked just fine. Now I cant get my dialer to work." If it is not one thing it is another." (Rosanna Rosanna Danna)
Thanks a Ton
