just trying to pinpoint my problem. windows senses when it is connected and when it isn't. but doesn't work. so it might be one of my windows files.

For the mouse to work in DOS you need to install the DOS drivers and restart the computer. Make sure the mouse is correctly identified in control panel.

Are you saying to see if the BIOS detects the mouse because windows doesn't? ..For the BIOS just watch it boot up and it will say floppy A: installed mouse installed keyboard installed.

if you see mouse there then the BIOS see's it but once you get into windows but you see the pointer and it doesn't work then that is a different story.

jin so if the bios says a mouse is installed and if I see the mouse in windows and it doesn't work in your opinion would this be windows OS problem that I've got or is it a dreaded hardware problem. thx for the info

Just out of my own dumb curiosity, did you try to remove the mouse from the Device Manager and then detect new hardware and let Windows reinstall?

bigslammer yes if bios see's mouse then it would be an operating system problem..

boot to a command prompt only. F8 when say starting windows 95, or ctrl when say starting windows 98. choose command prompt only.

1. type cd windows
2. ren system.ini system.sex
3. copy sytem.cb system.ini
4. edit system.ini
[386Enh]
mouse=*vmouse, msmouse.vxd

[boot]
drivers=mmsystem.dll
mouse.drv=mouse.drv

5. put those lines in there if not already there.

6. save exit restart.
7. unless your mouse is broken or a serial mouse it should work.

Now you can decide if you want to edit system.sex and change lines in there then rename it back to system.ini so you can retain what eva was in system.ini but normally you won't need what's in there..

Make sure you didn't accidently swap the keyboard and mouse connections in your mobo. Sometimes folks do that inadvertantly because the connectors all look alike.
