when I run scanreg it says that himem.sys is missing. So I boot up and in my windows directory there is a himem.sys file and my config.sys has the right path to himem.sys. the only problem that I've encountered is that my ps/2 mouse doesn't work and then my ps/2 keyboard also doesn't respond. tried a new ps/2 mouse and it too doesn't respond as does the keyboard(crtl+alt+del doesn't eve respond). So I stick an old serial mouse in the serial port and everything works fine the mouse moves choppy(but it's because it's old and dirty) but the keyboard now works fine. could my present but possibly corrupted himem.sys file be the cause of this problem. Or is this a hardware related problem(my mouse ps/2 port is broken). but the reason I don't think it's a hardware related problem is because when no mouse is installed windows notifies me that there is no pointing device connected and when I put a new ps/2 mouse in windows detects the hardware and attempts to search for the best driver. I know drivers are not the problem. Also tried to use my boot disk but when I flashed the bios on this IBM APTIVA that we bought last year the boot disk won't work and says that "incorrect bios version and that this product is not liscensed to this machine". and I can't find the old bios in order to get the boot cd to work. Is there a place that I can download a himem.sys file. Thx

himem.sys should be on your Windows startup disk - you should also get it on a boot disk at www.bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com)

himen.sys is the extended memory manager that allows your OS to use memory beyond the 1st 1MB - Windows will not run without it.

make sure that himem.sys, if loaded in config.sys, is listed FIRST!

Your mouse? I dunno.. A simple DOS level mouse driver should fit inside the 1st 1MB and you could even loadhigh.
