Anybody out there know how to control the folder view settings in the registry? I cannot get XP to remember my folder views. Every single time I open any folder the view reverts to the system defaults. In fact I also notice that the window size and placements are never remembered by the system either.
Yes, I have done all the normal folder view adjustments. Yes, I have tried playing with the window sizing by openening/changing/closing/reopening. I have tried changing the default number of views remembered in the registry. Nothing works. It's driving me mad!! Help!
Setup Explorer the way u want, then tools > folder options > view tab > click "apply to all folders > close explorer.
Right click on the exploerer shortcut > select properties > in general tab go down to the line "Run" an select maximized.

Sorry, tweb, I don't understand. Right-click what shortcut exactly? I don't know of any explorer shortcuts. Is it an icon on the desktop?
I already tried the apply to all folders bit many times. My original post says I have tried doing all the well-known tricks like resizing, etc. It does not want to retain the settings in the registry! What I am trying to learn is where this is controlled in the registry.

Here is a link from Microsoft which addresses the issue you have:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813711
Also, note that if you have installed SP2 then this update is already done
You will need to go back into the file explorer and reset the way you want
things to be, including which fields to display & column widths, if you do not
like the default sizes or features

Thanks for the try, but it really helps to read the post before spending your time answering. Also this machine is SP2 already; this problem developed AFTER it was service-packed! Thanks anyway.

If you set up a folder the way you want it to look, try pressing CTRL when you click the X to close the window. That often will force windows to set a specific view. I noticed you hadn't posted that you tried that.
As far as the shortcut mentioned above, you can create a shortcut to any application and there is an option in the shortcut to make the target run in a maximized window. That is all Tweb was trying to have you do.
It is my understanding that folder settings are not stored in the registry but in a file called desktop.ini that is located in each folder. You must view hideen files to see the desktop.ini file. You could delete the file and reset you folder view as a test also.

Hello rraehal,
Sorry, but that did not work either!
Below are the contents of my desktop.ini file:
[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@shell32.dll,-21774
Do you see anything there that gives a hint?
