I have an Asus P5A. I wanted to use the monitoring system that keeps an eye on fan rotation. I figured the little 2-wire (red and black) coming off the power supply was for the ATX power suply fan. Like a dope I tried to plug it into the 3-prong connector on the m/b labeled 'power fan'...even though the fan was working anyway. When I plugged it in, the plastic around the 2-wire coming off the power supply (ATX) immediately melted off and the other 2 fans stopped working ( the case fan and the CPU fan). I put a different CPU fan in (this one plugs into a power connector, not the m/b) and it works fine...and everything else is OK too, but the 3-wire case fan still doesn't work.

Did I damage the m/b or just burn up the fans that I had plugged into the m/b? And what was that 2-wire lead coming off the power supply?

Thanks, Mike...a first-timer

ps- the computer works fine other than the fans that I had plugged into the m/b.

"Thou shalt not plug in something which thou knowest not exactly wither it goeth."

..and this applies to more than just computers.

Consider yourself lucky that it still works at all. Only further diagnostics will tell what you toasted, in the meantime get some fans that run off the PS leads.

Don't be surprized if your motherboard quits without warning in the near future.
