dell inspiron 8600 with windows xp pro.
linksys wireless router b type.

last couple of weeks when booting up get error message
"zerocfgsvc mfc application", with send to microsoft box.

my wireless icon shows connected about halfway through boot, then when
boot icons all appear loaded, the wireless icons disconnects and then immediately begins to reconnect, taking about a minute or so.

prior to this, wireless icon never connected until end of all task bar boot icons up.

no known changes. run zone alarm, spybot, adaware, spyblaster, avast antivirus.
all uptodate and scanned regularly.

I tried to disable and reenable, but no change. uninstalled the adapters and rebooted. same problem.

Delete function grayed out for the connection, thinking I would reestablish it, but
don't know how else to delete this connection.

tried disabling/stopping wireless zero config under services. no change.

as I can connect not a HUGE problem, but irritating and would like to fix it.

Any help appreciated. Thanks!

are you using the linksys config software? if so, disable the wzc service.

did you upgrade to SP2? the wzc is much better in sp2

are you using sp2 or not? installing that can fix some wzc problems.

you can load the linksys wifi config from the cd or else you'll have to download it from their website.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 that had this issue. I eneded up Formatting the laptop to fix it and all has been fine since. My problem happened just liek yours. Everything was fine and then one day it quit. I could not fix it. Hope yours doesn't come to that.

I would uninstall the device from your system as a starting point. Next go to C:\Windows\Inf and see if there is a file called OEM##.inf that is for your linksys card. (The ## can be replaced by a numer OEM.INF, OEM1.INF, etc...) If you find it delete the file. Windows will need your CD to install the software again (at least typically that is the case) - Make sure you have the latest driver from linksys. Reinstall the driver and see if your issue is resolved. If you are familiar with searching you can search C:\Windows\Inf for files named OEM*.inf containg text linksys to see if you can find the file automatically.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. As I said, there is no linksys software installed on this computer.

I did notice in the event viewer, a "DCOM" error which seems to mean the
network is not connecting in the alloted time, causing it to close, then immediately
reconnecting ok.

I may do a reinstall, but sure hate to do that.

Adkiso,

I had the same issue. Downloading and installing the latest intel wireless driver & proset tool from support.dell.com fixed my issue. I had to reboot twice for some reason and you lose any SSID and WEP key information you had stored previously, but it fixes the zerocfg.exe crashing problem.
