Yea, it's me again. This time with modem problem on my homemade PC. I installed a modem from Office Dept called Mach II and it doesn't work. Windows said it was installed successfully, but no dail tone. Ran diagnostic test under modem properties and it said to be sure that the interrupt for the port was correct. It is COM 2 , interrupt =3. Com 2 is 3 on this PC I'm on now.
I go and buy a mew modem, Creative Blaster and install it . Same problem. What is the problem? Thanks.

I don't see serial port com 2 there. I can see any ports at all. Could it be worded some other way?

OS?
Com2 Standard value I/O range 02f8-02ff and Interupt 3.
You can change com3 to com 2 in Control Panel/system menu by changing it's value. Also there is diagnostic option for modem in Control Panel/Modems

I just noticed that the modem on this PC is on COM 3. Maybe the one I'm having problems with should be also. How do you change it. (Exact) Under device manager they both show COM1, COM2 and LPT1. Under CPanel\modem\diagnostic it shows, on this PC, COM1 serial mouse, Com2 nothing, and COM3 the modem. I sure need some help with this. OS is 95.

I had similar problem and resolved it by changing value of port 2, but it is tricky job. Write down present value of port 1 and 2 and change port 2 until it become port 3. You will have to restart each time. Are you sure that you can't change com port on your modem.

what kind of modem is it (which kind of slot does it go in)? isa, pci or external?
Does the modem have jumpers on it? Or is it jumperless?
What kind of mouse are you using? Serial or PS2?
You ought to be able to put the modem on any comport that isnt using the mouse.
Need more info- this is a commom problem, if I can find it, I'll post a link on the subject.

first of all you cannot have the modem on com3 if u have the mouse on com1.. 1 and 3 are the same for some reason and 2 and 4 are together... change the jumper settings on your modem to com 2 then disable com2 on your bios.. it won't say that com port 2 on your bios config, but look for parallel 2 or something like that, that has 2F8E or something like that then disable it.. when i get home i'll specifically tell you, if you haven't fixed it yet let me know then i'll post it here...

Going back to the 1st post, it is a MACHII from Office Max. Have also tried Creative Blaster. Windows 95. I see no jumpers on the modem. The PC I am typing on at this minute, has the moden on COM3 (interrupt 5, Address 3EB, so could they not be the same.

This is assuming that modem will be on Com 1.

Disable Com 1 in the BIOS.
Reserve IRQ 4 for ISA in BIOS if you can.
Go to Control Panel/Add New Hardware and choose- will pick hardware from list. Highlight Ports (Com & LPT's).Click on
next button.Click on next button again. A window will come saying- Win can install your hardeware using the following
settings- I/O 3E8-3FF and IRQ 4. These are the settings for COM 1. Click next button and you will be done.
Install modem using Com 1 / IRQ 4 and you will be in business.
