Alright, I just built a new system, amd k6 266 cpu, efa pegasus II p5tx-atx motherboard(intel 430tx chipset), 32 meg edo(hey it was free, I stole it from work), 24x cyberdrive cd rom, and a seagate ata-2 3.2 gig medalist hard drive. When I power up, the system won't reconize the hard drive, just if it's not there. What gives? It reconizes the cd-rom and floppy, but no hard drive. Any suggestions? Thanks. C.C.

Make sure that your slave/master jumper settings are correct, your boot HD preferably should be master on IDE 1. That way you can setup all the other devices without having to worry about it trying to boot up off of them (there's an explanation for this but just put it on IDE 1 set as master for your boot drive to make things easier). Make sure that no 2 things are set as the same thing on the same IDE cable, and try to stay away from cable select. Does your mother board support udma\66 HD? If not you will need a controller card unless the HDD can be set to udma \33. Some must be run at the udma\66 settings.

I presume you have tried to detect ur HD thru BIOS and this is not recognising or is it getting that sytem boot error ??

You checked all ur connector cables etc make sure they in right way round?

I have double checked all of my cables and they seem to be right. The Hard drive is set as the primary master while the cd-rom is et as the primary slave. In the bios, when I try to detect the hard drive, it acts as if nothing is hooked up, no error messages or anything. As for the motherboard being udma\66 compatible, I'm not for sure. The manual I got with the board is, for a lack of words, **** poor. It's probably not considering I only paid 20 bucks for the board. As far as I can tell, their is no way to change the hard drive itself. I'm going to do a little more research and try to find out. Anymore suggestions? Thanks. C.C.

Seagate's drives are backwards compatible. You don't need to worry about udma 66 support on your mobo, it will support a udma 33 drive also.
Besides which, I doubt the drive is udma 66 compatible, judging from the size. Of course, it's impossible to say without the model number. Just a guess.

Try disconnecting the CD Drive from the cable, set your drives in the BIOS to Auto and see if it can read it then.

Try putting the HD under primary IDE 2
