Can a bad printer port or printer expansion card cause a computer not to boot? I was working on a PC today that would not boot if a printer or scanner was attached to the printer port. As soon as the device was removed, the computer booted right up. I changed the printer settings to ecp, epp, etc but no go. When I started on the PC, the complaint was that the computer told him the printer was no longer attached to the system. The machine was then rebooted but it hung on the splash screen. I was able to get in through safe mode and found three LPT 1 ports installed in the device manager. I removed them all as well as the Com ports and machine now boots fine. I have never seen a computer not boot because of a printer port. Bad HD, Video and memory yes. But never a bad printer port. Any ideas??

Has no one responded because of the spelling error in the subject? It should read boot up problem.

I worked on one a couple weeks ago. It had boot problems, lock up problems, and wouldn't print. Found the same problem. Someone had installed 5 different printers. Got rid of all of them except the one that actually had a printer attached to it, and works fine.

I removed all the printers in the printer folder but the system wont boot if anything is attached to the parrallel port. I wonder if the parrallel connector is bad, if it would cause the system not to boot.

Problem fixed. There was glue put on all the connectors by the manufacturer and it melted onto the printer connector. This was causing a short. Removed the glue and it all works now.
