could someone point me in the right direction to set up a wireless connection to share a dsl modem connection..I've did a search and came up with some stuff, but I thought one of you experts could give me some advice...basicly I am taking an existing dsl set up and connecting it to a wireless router so I can share the internet with another computer that's on the other side of the building.... :t

that sounds doable. How far is the other building from the wireless router. if its more then 50 feet, you might need a wireless Access Point. even if you many AP the speed will still drop a little. the best thing is extend the wired connection from a Router as far as possible towards the other building then add a wireless AP.

the other computer is in the same building, but about 100ft or so in another room..God I hope I don't need a WAP..cuz the people who think they want this, didn't purchase that..LOL

100' is pretty far, especially if it needs to go through walls/glass. There are a few things you can do short of getting an AP if the signal isn't strong enough, such as getting a better antenna for the router. If the wireless is only going to be used in one specific office, i'd recommend getting a directional antenna pointing in that vacinity. You can go a step further and install a higher gain antenna on the wireless card as well. If they're using laptops, then this obviously wouldn't be feezable.
As far as setting the router up, if they're on DSL, they're most likely using a PPPoE connection which requires a username/password. You will need that information and set it up accordingly in the router.

Extending Wireless is highly depending on the specific envioroment the following pages describe the basic methods to Extend Entry Level Wireless, you would have to choose the one that fit your environment.

What kind of router is it? Most don't require any software at all, you configure them via a web browser. Most run on an internal address of 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

you need to see if you are getting an IP from the router. run cmd then ipconfig. you would have an IP of 192.168.1.x. the default linksys router IP is 192.168.1.1

And no need to install router software on any machine... All you need to install are the drivers for the wireless adapter card. Then go to a machine hooked up to the router, open up IE (or your browser of choice) type in http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar. You will probably be asked for a username/password. Leave username black and for password, type "admin" without the quotes. I believe that is the default login for linksys routers.

ahh yes..I finally got to read part of the instructions for this...I talked to quest and they say there is nothing they need to configure at their end...however it said I need to have the nic card on the one machine(the secrataries--NOT the police departments machine) set to dhcp..I suppose that won't be a problem less she's got a hard coded IP address on the machine(it's not my works pc )

Yeah, unless there is a reason she needs a static IP, it'll make your life easier if you just set everything to DHCP and let the router handle it.

Yeah, you definatly don't want to leave the wireless wide open. You will want to atleast have WEP or better yet WPA encryption setup.
