I wanted to use AVG anti virus as an alternative to Macafee, but everytime I uninstall Macafee I lose my internet connection. Any idea why this is happening?

Via motherboard.

Any help would be appreciated.

What exactly do you mean when you say you lose your internet connection? Do your network settings change or something? Also, what kind of internet connection do you use?

What happens, is that I lose my connection. I think something changes in my network settings, I just can't figure out what. If I try to go online, I get that blank page, saying to check my settings.

And what happens when you do in fact check your settings?

What kind of internet connection do you use?

I'm connected to the net through a cable modem which then runs through a router. where I connect with a network cable, and my laptop connects wirelessly. Once I reinstall Macafee, the connection works again.?!!!!

A logical conclusion would be that McAfee changes your network settings somehow. Have you checked?

Alternatively, you could try uninstalling McAfee and setting up your internet connection from scratch, see if that works.

One of the things that happens is that I still see that my network adapter says it's connected, but when I right click and click repair, it tell me that it cannot renew my ip address.

Sorry I didn't reply earlier but for some reason I don't get notification e-mails for this thread anymore.

Go to "Network and Dial-up Connections", right click on your network connection, click "Properties", select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", click the "Properties" button, and make a note of the settings there. These settings control your computer's IP address and DNS server addresses. Both can be obtained automatically, in your case from your wireless router I suppose.

Does anything in these settings change when you uninstall McAfee?

Also, have you checked the McAfee site if this is a known problem? They have an online chat support thing too which has helped me quite well once. You could try that.

The most common issue when uninstalling norton or mcafee is the firewall settings do not get removed properly. You can download WinSock XP Fix from the sticky: http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?t=161595

After McAfee is uninstalled use the WinSock XP fix. It will set your LAN to default MS settings. Install AVG quickly. It is possible to get infected with a Virus by simply having access to the internet. This typically solves the issue for me.
