Ok. I got a new PCI modem and it's a USR Robotics 56K Voice WinModem, but it's OEM. I plugged that card into my PCI slot, and booted up my computer. Everything went ok, accept when i'm in windows, the hardware detector tells me to install the "PCI Communication drivers". I went through the modem CD and windows CD to try and install that driver, but that hardware can't find it. Can anyone help me? Is it certain drivers I need to download or what?

Thanks for your time. Kinmon

Here is a link to the USR Winmodem help page; You can get full information here and download a driver, then you could easily browse to it when installing the modem.

consumer.3com.com/winmodem (http://consumer.3com.com/winmodem)

It sounds like you need to browse the CD to the drivers folder for your particular modem and the appropriate driver subfolder, like "Win95/98," and tell Windows "OK" (look here); you may then get a message saying it still cannot find the driver, but usually you just hit "OK" again or browse to the driver again and hit "OK."

Also, there may be an installation program on the CD so see if you can find a "setup" file.

Winmodem's can ba a bugger to setup, I just returned two cheap Winmodems to the store, one would not allow the the IRQ to be reset and the other would disconnect frequently. the same system now has a controller based modem and works perfectly.

Are there any yellow exclaimation marks in the Device Manager on components other than the modem?

Well, there is no yellow exclamation marks in the Device Manager on anyother components, except on the "OTHERS" group. There's no exclamation marks on my modem part too. Since the yellow exclamation mark is in my "Others" group, it points out PCI Communication Device. I've tried searching through my win98 CD and modem CD, but I still can't find any. Does that mean that my modem has a problem?

Have you tried this?

Try deleting that exclamation reference, rebooting and have your modem CD ready.

When WIN redetects and asks for the drivers, do a browse and double click every subdirectory on the CD until you find it. You'll know you found it when it pops into the box at the left.

If you have, another thing you can try is uninstalling the modem software and reinstalling.

Did this modem come with any floppy disks? Because the retail box ones come with floppy disks that have the drivers on them. But I beleive on the CD anyway they have the drivers too. But you have to tell windoze where they are and I think they are in a dir called drivers somewhere on the disk.
But if and when you find the right driver for it, it will come back and say that you found a pci usr 56k modem. Then click finish.

OH NO! Something is still wrong. I still can't get my modem to work. How come it says "install drivers for PCI Communication"???? Does that mean the modem drivers or the port drivers. I think I need to return this yucky modem. =(

When a winmodem installs the software, it is installing both the modem software as well as the COM port that is needed to run it.

After directing WIN to the CD with the drivers and fully installing it, you are still left with exclamations?

Yup. Seems like i need to contact USRobotics, eh? Or, does my mobo manufacturer has to do anything with this?
