I finally took the plunge and upgraded to Windows XP Pro almost two weeks ago. The upgrade from 2000 Pro did not go smoothly and I ended up having to do a repair install. Things are working fine now, but when I start up the computer, I get a Novell Net Ready Firmware boot screen. I've checked my BIOS repeatedly (latest version) and Boot from LAN is disabled. I also have Try Other Boot Devices set to No, and my NIC is nowhere in the boot order. How do I fix this? I can boot into Windows okay, I just have several extra unneeded seconds.

It's a built-in SiS 900. Never had this happen during Windows 2000....

It is unchecked in the NIC properties, and disabled in the BIOS.

Changing the OS has nothing to do with the BIOS boot up process nor the order of boot priority.

Something must have changed in the BIOS.

I've known that all along. The thing is I've changed nothing in the BIOS, especially not during the upgrade. All I did change was the boot order. Used to be IDE HDD first, now it's:

1. SYM 8XX SCSI CD
2. 1.44MB FLOPPY
3. IDE-0

Try Other Boot Devices: No

Wake-On/Ring-On: Disabled

Network Boot: Disabled

I'm going to try resetting CMOS and replacing the battery, unless there are any other ideas out there....

I had a system with an Intel NIC a while ago. You did not set Network Boot via the BIOS. The card waited for the BIOS and would display a PXE Boot Screen. I could not bypass it. It was a hardware function in the nic that could not be shut off even in the NIC Utilities In the NIC ROM or software in Windows. Does your BIOS have PXE options that can be shut off?

Nope, nothing about what kind of LAN boot you can do in the BIOS, though it may appear it I were to enable it. For the record, it wants to boot RPL. Somebody elsewhere suggested to check for a rogue bootloader that may have gotten installed during the upgrade, by booting with all drives disconnected.

What did reseeting to defaults do?

what motherboard is it? is there some kind of DOS utility to access the BootPROM on the card? I've had to manually change settings on 3com cards before using their dos utility.

rraehal - haven't done anything tonight, just got back form the White Sox game. Go Jays! :)

MK - it's a PC-Chips M847LU (aka ECS K7S7AG). Before anyone wants to bash those brands, I say again the thing was solid as a rock while on Windows 2000.

Well, I unplugged the power to my hard drive and booted, but the behavior persisted. So I reconnected the drive and went into BIOS. I changed the boot order to my hard drive first and presto, it's fixed. Odd, huh? I had SYM 8xx as my first boot device for booting off my SCSI CD/DVD drives. Invoked LAN boot <shrug>
