First check the cmos detup in the bios. are the Cyl, heads and other settings right for the HD? if so then move on. are you using a HD that has already been formatted to a 32 Fat? Did you set the primary dos Partition?
If not, dump the switch and just fdisk. Some hard drives must be setup using specialty software. Maxtor for example specificaly warns against LL formating on several of it's disks. Hope this helps.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. The cmos settings in the bios is now auto detecting the hard drive. It's a brand new Fujitsu 13Gb. The little instuction sheet that came with it only gives cylinder and head etc. details up to 8GB and there was no install floppy with the drive. So Auto Detect is my only choice. I'm not clear on what you mean by "dump the switch". When I run fdisk from the floppy, it shows the long message about large disk, FAT32, yadda yadda, then it asks if I want to continue, using FAT32, Y or N. Either one I choose immediatly dumps me back to the a: prompt. Isn't it supposed to continue with the fdisk options, like setting partitions and such? I greatly appreciate any more help on this as I've got a useless brand new PC! Ugh!
