I've had a booming noise coming thru my speakers upon startup for more than a month now. Details... it happens with both sets of speakers I've tested with and even if I had shutdown with sound muted, it would still make the noise upon reboot or a cold boot. What frustrates me more is that it is an intermittent problem and doesn't make the noise on every boot. There seem to be no IRQ conflicts or anything of the sort.

My question is how do I know if my sound card is going bad? Would this be an indication? Someone had said that the noise is due to the powering up of the capacitors but didn't have any solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Running AMD K6-2/350@400 with freshly installed WIN98SE (still happens after new install of OS). Sound Blaster AWE64 PCI and 64MB PC100 SDRAM. Oh yeah, 2 sets of cheap speakers - but that shouldn't create the noise.

It may be when the capacitor fire up, they may sent that sound through the speakers especially if they are cheap, you cant do anything about that exept buy a new system (it could be your computer/speakers/amp if you are using an external one). Also try changing your cables to the speakers, if it does it at random that sounds like you may have a splice in one of your cables.

Hmm, interesting thought about the splice in my cables. The only cable that runs from my sound card to the speakers is the one that's already connected to my cheap speakers. I don't think that there's a splice in the line for both SETS of speakers though.

I put this system together myself about 5 months ago and it didn't have this problem for 4 months of it. Same peripherals and all. This happened for 1 week after tinkering with the components... but it went away by itself after a few days then (sometime in July). But this time, it hasn't gone away even after a month of being settled in its place this time. Any more ideas?
