Help! I am setting up an NT system at the moment for a friend. He want to run some of his old DOS based programs from Windows NT 4 (service pack 4). All my knowledge of Pc is from Windows 3.11/95/98 at Nt is a tad more complex! One of the programs I am setting up gives me a "divide overflow" error and yet probable once every 10 attempts it will start, but later crashes. what's it all about
Cheers mates

windows nt emulates dos so the old hardware routines will not work.
win95/98 still have real dos so there is no problem .
remember Nt is pure 32 bit and has nothing
to do with dos .

I just had a similar problem at wok the other day....NT sets it DOS environment in 2 files called autoexec.nt and config.nt
You can probably make your DOS prog. work by modifying config.nt with these two lines or something like them:
FILES=30
BUFFERS=20
Good luck!

OK let me clear this up... Most old dos programs wont work in win nt because of the old legacy system in witch dos prog's were made in allowed prog's to have direct access to memory addresses, nt wont let them do that. so they dont work note "overflow" although the dos prog's that dont use legacy will run, yet some times your computer can actually be to fast for them, there are many progs out there that will slow you computer down for you, wait a sec windows allready does that for you! +)
