My old 17" monitor died and can't be fixed /forum/frown.gif. So I need a monitor this week or as soon as possible. I have a budjet of $450 Australian, so is it possible to get a 17 inch monitor for this amount that is reasnable. I know I can't get a sony for this price however I was lookig at the Mitsubishi monitors etc are the 17inch ones any good?

>>>Since I havd a rather small budjet, are I better of getting a good quality 15inch monitor instead although I hope this is not the case /forum/smile.gif?

I was also just wondering if I could get on onlie (I AM IN Australia, not the US) and where?

Urgent help, totally confused here
Thanx, Ex-Ace

Can't offer any advice price-wise since I've no clue as to exchange rate!

But I'll kick in my opinion about quality. Forgive me if I get "wordy", I'm particular about monitors as this is one of the most important parts of the system & one that can be retained for several computer changes! (Plus, I can't sleep & am bored! /forum/smile.gif )

Monitors can be very different even if same specs. It will look different hooked to your machine, under your room lighting, than it does on display. Plus there is no way to really test it at the store. Takes several hours before it'll cause eyestrain. Spend more if needed to get good one, saving a few bucks only to have headaches & eye problems is foolish.
Buy from local store if at all possible. One with good selection and easy return policy. Tell them up front that it might be coming back for exchange.

Last time I was monitor shopping I bought & tried 5 before keeping one! All were good brands & looked fine at display, just didn't fill the need in real use. Store didn't hassle as we talked beforehand, and I'm a long-time customer.
I know you said Sony was out of reach, but that's what I've got. Their CPD200ES is excellent 17" display reasonably priced around here. About $300-$350 US. Was more when I got it last year. Anyway, it's got good, clear image. No problems using for hours of text (database) work at 1024x768. Also great color when gaming, again, no eyestrain.

Not really trying to promote the Sony, the point is to get a good monitor that you'll be happy with you've GOT to try it at home!

Viewsonic has several good 17" models, here the best one was actually more than the Sony but this may have changed. I'd probably try one of theirs first if affordable. Ignore the cheapest or "no-name" stuff, they're pretty well junk.

Since you've had a 17" monitor, I doubt you'd be happy with a 15". If good 17" is out of reach right now, find someone with extra old 14" or 15" you can use while saving up! If you spend what you've got on inferior monitor, you'll regret it every time you use it!

I agree Sony are good but Microvision sell new 15" monitors in NZ cheaper than buying second hand 15"svga form other makers, so they are a good stop gap and didpay isn't to bad either. if of any help to convert USD to AD just times USD by 1.56 or USD to NZD times by 2 and your pretty close to exchange value. both OZ and NZ have the disavantage that they don't have the compact high number of people out there as buyers so we don't get the big discounts or close out that you can get in the States, one of the reason we use US based auction sites is that quite often we can purchase products that are half if not a quarter of the price locally.

Ed-s,

I couldn't aggree more generally with what you have said but due to my other monitor dying this has put me back a fair bit. I simply do-not have the money to latch out and by myself a nice quality sony trinitron or whatever for $600 or $800. I am still studying hard at college yr 11 and don't have a full time job. Generally I am a brand man, (especially in suround sound and speakerindusrty /forum/smile.gif )and I will try and compromise with this monitor.

Kepp em comming fellas,
Only a week to decide, again thanx to all contribution

ww, so far I havn't been able to find tatung or microvision monitors anyware.

Well it looks like I might be getting a

17" Digital 0.28 Viewmaster for $390 or a
17" ADI microscan for $425
Am I drasticly making a bad choice and which is the better of the two?

hi
if memory serves me correctly, digital is a division of Compaq, so it should be reasonable quality and have a good resale value when you can afford better, as for other make not had much to do with that make, but some one out there will be able to tell you more about them.

p.s. did you try www.times.com.au (http://www.times.com.au) also if you guys and gals in the States want to see the sort of retail prices they have to put up with in Oz click on link , for retail monitors and check out the Sony prices there, any one for a second mortgage

I've got a Digital 15" on one of mine, it's a decent monitor.
I assume that's $390AD , so approx. $250 US, right? A bit pricey compared to here.

Never heard of ADI.

WW - WOW!!! That's horrible pricing!
Even with the exchange rate!

Using the Sony CPD200ES as reference, it can be bought local here in St Louis, Missouri for $349 US

349 us x 1.56 = 545 ad
Their price is listed as $1014
You guys are getting the shaft bad!!
They're made in Thailand, that's closer to you for shipping, isn't it?

Even worse - Today's Circuit City ad shows the 19" Sony at $599(=$935AD)
that page from times.com shows $1931.80!!!

We sell ADI monitors where I work. They're passable - not great, but they're okay.

Don't forget that quality of picture also depends on the quality of the graphics card. My colleague was using a 21" Iiyama (one of the best monitors you can get) and the picture quality was far from great - due simply to the fact that it was hooked up to a second-rate no-name graphics card.

My own monitor? It's a second-hand 17" AST (probably a re-badged Samsung). I picked it up dirt cheap last year and the picture quality is excellent - bright and clear with absolutely no distortion even at the extreme corners. I guess I was just lucky but I'd never buy new again. So, I don't have a warranty but at the price I paid, I'm happy to take that risk.

I have an AOC Spectrum 7Vlr that I paid about
$225 when I bought my computer. And of all the monitors I've seen for alot more, I don't believe you wouldn't be satisfied with it for the money. Good luck
