i noticed that my desktop computer's clock has been getting behind the past few weeks. is the battery going dead? my motherboard 2.25 yrs old.

It may be...open it up and look for a battery that's similar to a watch battery, but bigger. Radio Shack should have a replacement.

If replacing the battery doesn't solve your problem, i.e., the problem recurrs fairly soon, something may be draining electricity on your motherboard. I had a similar problem.

thanks for replying on my post! couple more questions: how long does a cmos battery usually last? if it doesn't last long, what could be the cause?

When the CMOS does not hold the time, the next likely suspect could be the BIOS Chip itself.

It doesn't hurt to give a little push onto the the BIOS chip and make sure it's firmly in place as it can wiggle some in the socket from the different temperature changes of the motherboard over time.

If that is to no avail, your BIOS chip could be bad or the motherboard itself is going.
