finally got my new pc running (a p2 333@478mhz). Now comes the bigger problem. My bios recognizes both drives a maxtor 7.83 gb and my ata66 ibm 13.5 gb. I try to get to windows and copy all my files to my new HD but windows doesn't even see it or assigns it a drive letter. Also where do I get drivecopy demo version or is there a windows utility that does it for me.

Did you format both drives?

I'm a little confused.

Does Windows Load on the computer, And then you have trouble finding the hard-drive?

Or are you still in DOS when you can't find them?

The reason Windows or DOS wont see the new drive is because you first have to Fdisk it to give it partitions and then you need to format it to give it drive access. from your boot disk type Fdisk and then if you are going to use Win98 enable large disk support (this is the first question Fdisk will ask) Then choose option 5 (this lets you change which hard drive you are going to work with) then choose option 1 and it will ask you for what size you want to create. (if you want to use the new drive as a singe partition just type 100% and it will create the partition. then exit out and reboot with your boot disk and then type Format X: (X will be the drive letter that you want to format)

Good luck

Let me just add this cautionary note to the fine recommendations of mntsnow, although I think he implied this in a round-about kind of way: Just be sure that you are fdisk'ing and formatting the correct drive!

I partitioned it and formatted with no luck. so I did it again and just answered the questions on fdisk with answer number 1. So then I use drivecopy 4.2 and my old one has 3.9gb of data. tried to copy it my new 13.5 HD and it says destination disk full and that it could not copy any more source files. full? i've got 13.5gb. gonna run fdisk again and choose setting five.

Bigslammer, also make sure your bios is set to AUTO for hard drive detection and that you don't still have settings for some other hard drive left in bios.

Thanks Cmonster! Yes double check your self when using Fdisk....to make sure you are working on the correct drive. that's why I mentioned: Then choose option 5 (this lets you change which hard drive you are going to work with) and then:...Format X: (X will be the drive letter that you want to format)
