Old Mac won't talk to printer anymore

Okay, I'm really in the blind here. A friend of a friend wants to know why his very old Mac won't talk to his very old printer all of a sudden. The fun part is that I've never even seen his setup, nor do I have any experience with Macs, old or new. I told him I couldn't help him, but thought I'd throw it out on here so you could chew on it for a while and maybe give me some ideas. The local Apple vendors only wanted him to buy a new system and wouldn't help him at all.

Could be various reasons - Apple talk inactive (if he print trough apple talk), printer disabled, cable connection and …..
Best thing for start is go to chooser and check printer setup and apple talk and after that prints anything and waits for message. I hope it will help but I need little more information.
