Having a problem at the moment with a high ping when online gaming. Have a 1mb broadband connection and up until 5-days ago was getting a ping of 25-30 in Mohaa and CoD when online. The last fews days ping has risen to 90-100 on every server i seem to play??
I have checked and there is nothing running in the background that I can see that is effecting this, or nothing new anyway. I run sygate personal firewall and nothing is accessing the internet at the same time. Have checked the upload and download speeds and these are as normal as ever?

Any ideas whats causing this, or more important how can I fix this!

Some of the general questions would be are you running any programs in the background or on your network that would take up bandwidth? (IM clients, P2P Programs, BT Clients)

When you disable the firewall, do pings improve?

Also, make sure you are joining servers that are geographically close to you.

It could also be a server-specific issue, but if it happens on multiple servers, I'd doubt that.

have pretty much disabled everything to try and tie the problem down to no avail. Up until 5-days ago I have had Skype, MSN, DMW, Norton AV and Microsoft antispyware running and still got a ping of 30 on virtually all servers. Problem has only been in last 5-days. I have disabled all these and now can only get 90-100 on every server! Very frustrating.

And you say that normal downloading of files off the internet is still fine? What about uploading files? Is that taking more time than usual?

Most of the time its just the server. Some days might be busy or flooded and for whatevr reasons pings go up... thats the internet for ya. Your cable company may be usspect also ..as each one and each of our locations..meaning where we reside are the other contributing factors....

I myself still wonder why I seem to never connect up to my special server I like while playing CSS. I have a 6000kbps connection and a low ping of about 85..on the norm and when I enter a new map... I am about the eith or ninth player on our side that enters most of the time..and it never changes very often. Each new map ( about 80% of them ) I miss the opening rd of play.

A ping of 80-100 is still very good...so why sweat the small stuff? ;)
