Hey, when I tried to connect one time, it said that it could not open the port for the modem HUH? I had just connected prior to that attempt without a restarting even. So after about 3 attempts, and going into control panel/modems it was still listed, yet it was no longer listed in device manager so now I was really confused. How did it dissapear from device manager when I had just connected a couple hours earlier without even a restart? So I ended up switching the port for the modem (its a 33.6 USR that only conn.'s at 28.8 cause of crappy phone line, ive tried everything else) and it worked, no problem. So to see if the other ISA slot had gone bad I switched it back, then it worked, but I could hear the connection coming from the modem... so I switched it again, and then it started making the kkksssshhhh connection sound on that port as well. So I switched it back to the original one for a last time, confused, and still it made the noise, then after about 5mins of being online it died out, and is working fine right now, but I have yet to reconnect to see if it will do the same again for another 5mins.. or however long. Anyone have any clue as to what this could be or is my modem just screwed?

Try putting back on orignal port, dump the device, reboot, reload modem driver.

Good advice about dumping the drivers and re-installing. With win 98 what sometimes happens is you will disconnect but the modem stayes initialized making the port unavilable. I have only seen this with PCI Modems but the Re-install has always fixed it for me.
