Heloo all. I got an old laptop Toshiba 470CDT and thinking about reinstalling windows 98 on it but it doesn't have a floppy drive. The weird thing is that in my computer it does show there is an A: drive. I just wonder is there a way to install win 98 without the setup disks? Is there a way to make the windows 98 disk bootable??? Thanks :)

If you have a burner...You should be able with a copy of UBCD (http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/index.html) , select to use Madboot , which should give choices to manually install W98 .

Madboot readme (http://www.madboot.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=MadBoot&file=index&Operation=ReadMe)

Of coarse the laptop needs to be able to boot from the CDrom drive . Check the bios and your manual.

Windows 98 CD's ARE bootable. In fact, the boot program sets up a virtual floppy in RAM, listing it as an "A" drive.

If you have some weird early-edition copy of Windows 98 that's NOT bootable, get a newer version. In fact, I'd recommend you use 98 Second Edition anyway.

If your 98 files are on some other kind of CD, you'll have to use another system to make a bootable CD with the Win98 directory from your CD on it.

Thanks all. I was able to put windows 2000 on it so no need of 98. Thanks again. :t

Oh god, Win2k on a weak system. I still remember how slow NT4 ran on Pentiums (where 95 ran fine).

Hopefully you'll be able to find all the drivers you need to make the factory installed peripherals work with Win2000. Many OEMS's skipped this version in their driver development.

Hehe....amazingly on 64mb or ram I installed 2k successfully but the installation took like 2 hours. Right now I only use it for internet and online games and don't plan to install any more apps so it works fine, a little slow but it works:) I thought I would get some massive errors or slowness but it works good :D The only werid thing is that my usb port won't work or detect anything. Looking into it :D

You're missing USB drivers. Win2K was intended for enterprises where it was assumed usb wouldn't be needed so they aren't native to the OS. Check the web and Toshiba's site and you migth be able to find a driver that will work.
