hi all,
ok...the other day i started up my PC (AMD k6-2 400, 64 mg,etc.) and found that after everythig had booted up....there was no background in Win 95, just the cursor(that would move around. I thought it might have somethig to do with this theme selector i have stupidly installed...so i went into 'safe mode' (and everything was all there). I deleted the program and rebooted, but it was all black again.
In all likelihood it has something to do with drivers but i haven't backed up and don't want ot re-install windows...HELP!?
thanks,
thommo

thommo - you said you "deleted" the program...
Did you Uninstall with Add/Remove in Control Panel or with the program's uninstaller, or, did you just 'delete' the files/folders from Explorer?
This "themes" prog could be buggy 3rd party ware and if it was just deleted vs. uninstalled, it could be the reason - something hasn't cleared out.
Let us know.

i had this happen to me about a year ago - and it was after i installed a theme, too. it was a halloween one - what about yours? anyways, i tried everything i could think of, and nothing worked for me - it was always a black screen with my cursor on there. i ended up reinstalling windows and that fixed it. i never found out what the problem was tho...

no...I mean to say that I unistalled it. I went into 'safe mode' and under control panel and all that I used the uninstall prog. This is really bumming me as i get the feeling it is a driver thing....but there are so many!!!

I haven't worked with Win95 for awhile and I dare not suggest anything which I may not remember correctly.
Someone assist?

Before you get desperate, check your display settings and change to the "Standard VGA Driver" reboot and see if that clears it up - then you could assume that your video driver might be corrupt. Try reinstalling the video driver.
And you could cruise by the device manager and just make sure there are no conflicts, in safe mode, remove any duplicate entries that are for old video cards and stuff you no longer have, or other major system components that have multiple entries - EXCEPT the ones under "System Devices" - you may want to leave those alone.
Have you tried restoring the registry from the backup copy? Instructions should be on your Windows manual.
As for Windows 95; You may also be able to reinstall Windows over the top of itself without loosing anything much, but I would suggest uninstalling USB support (if applicable) prior to reinstalling Windows - and in your case perhaps saying no to keeping newer files is best, even though that means you will likely have to reinstall all your patches and programs as well.

The program may have left bits and pieces in your registry. Try doing a search in the registry with a partial name of the program and see if anything comes up. If you are sure that what is found is really part of that program, delete those references. Then reboot.
