Have a P-233, 260 RAM, 16gig total (6 and 10)couple a days ago computer starts locking up for 5 seconds then resumes. Will affect even sounds …cause looping of 1 second of sound….even happens at start up, everything stops for seconds then resumes. I have defragged HD and registry, ran viri checks everything runs great til it stops. Also while running a system resource meter in real time it shows 100% cpu usage all the time! When this 1st started 2 days ago cpu was about 55% while working and 2% at rest. Checked all internal connections, closed all running software and disabled screensaver. Help something is hoggin’ my cpu. What NOW?!

A couple of Questions?

Is this an server?

If yes, Is there a primary and a backup server?

Do You have Mirroring enabled?

If you answered Yes to all these questions then thats most likely your answer.

Another thing to check is if this machine was defragged did you disable the swapfile or at least reassign it to a different drive before defraging.... I have seen this to be a common mistake while defraging if the swap file is active on the partition you are trying to defrag then that drive doesn't become defraged but an organized file system with a swiss cheesed swap file.

Here are the steps to properly defrag a Windows eviroment:

1.) boot normal
2.) enter swap file config and reassign file to a different drive or in your case with all that memory disable it.
3.) computer will want a reboot: if win9x enter safemode, NT machines can use Norton Speeddisk.
4.) while in safe mode run scandisk
5.) after scandisk run defrag and wait till done.
6.) reboot normal put your swap file back on the normal partition or leave as it was.

Good luck.....
