The HP line is very good and comes w/ Adaptec software. I have an HP 8110, last yr's model. I have been very happy w/ it. The 8210 is 4,4,24x and is excellent. PCWorld or PCMag rated it as the top burner a little while ago. The Ricohs have gotten very good reviews. At work I use a SCSI Smart and Friendly and we have had a few problems with it. I haven't heard good things. Good luck-Dave

I have read good reviews on the Yamaha 4416s CD-RW drive. It is a SCSI drive, so you need a SCSI adaptor card if you don't already have one. If I were to buy a CD-R or CD-RW drive, I think this one would be the one! I've seen it as low as $190 from online vendors (I think at buy.com). Add another $50+ for a SCSI adaptor, if you don't have one already!

Personally I would suggest saving a bit more money and then buy a Plextor SCSI 8x burner(I have this drive a love it!) as they are the best on the market at this time. But if you want to really stay around the 250 mark I would suggest the Yamaha drives as I have one in my machine at work and it runs great (4x burn. If you are not going to be doing a lot of burning then I would suggest one of the IDE burners as you can get a good deal on these all over the place. For IDE I would suggest the Ricoh's, Yamaha's or the new HP 8210 (its getting good reviews as of late)

Lots of models to choose from /forum/biggrin.gif

Good luck

I have to put in a plug for the Plextor as well. The 8x CDR (no rewritable) has come down to at least the neighborhood of $250. With CDR blanks costing less than $1 these days, do you really need rewritable CDs? With this 8x burner, you can burn a full CD in around 10 minutes and I've never burned a bad disc with it even with the cheapest of media. As with the Yamaha drive that JW310 mentions, you do need a SCSI card.

Sysopt.com has a section for user reviews of CD-R and CD-RW drives. The address is: www.sysopt.com/userreviews/products.cgi?cdrecord (http://www.sysopt.com/userreviews/products.cgi?cdrecord) There is a selection of about 50 or so drives, as well as how the average rating each reviewer gave them. This might be worth looking at to help you make your decision!

CompUSA has the 8x20x Smart and Friendly CD Rocket SE on sale right now for $200 (Reg. $250). It's the full retail box with Adaptec software and SCSI 2 PCI card. I bought one yesterday. /forum/biggrin.gif

I think the drive is the same as the Panasonic 7503B ... the only other 8x20x I can find.
