Hey there- I recently installed a Maxtor 10GB HD to compliment my 13 GB WD HD (can I abreviate anything else? /forum/smile.gif) My original configuration had my 13 GB partitioned into a 3GB (apps & OS) and the rest for games and frequently moved or deleted files. I put in the 10 GB to store CD files copied to the HD for faster access via IMSI's CD Copier app.
The maxtor set up as drive D and surplanted the 2nd partition of my WD to E. now my apps can't be found when I try to run them either from shortcuts or from the base exe file. I tried to unistall them through the control panel and then reinstall them but the uninstaller (Win98 unistaller) can't fing them in drive D. What can I do to rectify this? Mijenix Fix It can't find any errors. I could reinstall them but I don't want double space taken up. In one instance I tried to uninstall Need for Speed H.Stakes from the CD but it couldn't find the exe on D: either. Luckily I had just reinstalled everything and I only had 3 games and Netscape on the 2nd WD partition. Thanks for any advice you can give. Have a good one- Dave

If you have but a few things on WD 2nd partition Id take out the new HD and deal with whats on those partitions knowing whats going to happen when you add the new HD.

Thanks for the reply. Is there anything I need to do to prep my system in doing so? Thanks again.

If you take out the new HD and reboot your system should be just like you had'nt added the second HD.

You don't have to take out the second drive, you just have to set it up differently. Run fdisk and delete all partitions on this drive. Then create a new extended partition that covers the entire drive. Do not create any primary partion. Then, within this extended partion, create one (or more if you like)logical partions. Reboot and the partitions on your second drive will now be assigned drive letters after all of the drive letters on your first drive and your first drive partions will have their original letters. All you have to then do is format you new logical partition(s).
Good luck.

Thanks guys. Will this have any effect on performance? I suspect that it will not but just wanted to ask to make sure. Thanks again-Dave

I assume that your performance question refers to the fix whereby you set up your second drive with logical partitions only. This should not affect performance. Primary partitions are only needed if you plan to boot from a drive.

Go to control panel, system, device manager, disk drives, properties
and change the drive leters for D&E

Just move all the stuff on your E drive to the new D drive!

It should work like described above. I had the same proble. A lot of work if you've loaded programs onto new HD! Good luck.

I repartitioned the disk in question as an extended partition instead of being a primary and it went happily to drive letter E:. Thanks for the help. Since I had not installed all of my apps I lost very little. Have a good one! /forum/smile.gif /forum/smile.gif /forum/smile.gif
