I have a 2-month old HP Pavilion, 433MHz Celeron, 9.6GB Hard Disk and 96MB RAM. Recently, since about 3 weeks ago, while I'm doing regular tasks like playing Solitaire or surfing the Net ..... the system would suddenly lock up for 5-10 seconds and then return to normal again after that.

It's just strange, 'cause the mouse arrow will be frozen at the spot ..... can't type anything ..... for a few seconds, and then everything will be back to normal. It happens about once every 10 to 15 minutes.

Does anybody have any idea what's the problem and how to solve it ?

Thanks.

Is there any hard drive access when this freeze happens?

Next time it happens, check your cdrom light.....it's prob'ly being accessed...mine does the same thing. Anybody know how to stop the occasional Windows 98 cdrom check??

Try disabling Advanced Power Management option 'Power status poling' disable that.
In my case 95b if you leave the desktop or wite a letter and then try tp open anything
the system has to restart the D drive the cdrom etc - setting AVP off prevents this but I then use lots more electricity.
Hope that helps /forum/smile.gif

Try checking Start/Run/'msconfig'/Startup tab, and see if Office FindFast is checked (I uncheck Office Startup also).

Uncheck it/them if they are (and if you don't want them on startup!) - this is a real resource hog as FF automatically updates it indexes.

You might check to see if you have anything automatically set to run every 10-15 minutes.
