I've recently bought a completely new system and have installed Win98 (upgrade using a previous version of Windows). The program installs without a problem but will fail on the first restart and every time after that with a "While initialising IOS. Windows protection error" message in both Normal and Safe modes.
After a bit of research and playing around, I added the line "MaxPhysPage = xxxxx" into my [386Enh] section of the system.ini file to restrict the amount of memory Windows uses. The maximum I got to use was 64Mb (of my 128Mb) which would allow Windows to boot normally. Anything above this value creates either the error mentioned above or a general "Windows protection error."
Examining my bootlog.txt file, the IOS error occurs when trying to load the rmm.pdr file. I've tried removing this file and the loading gets a little further before failing at the hsflop.pdr file - which is also the point it fails at if I allocate between 64Mb and 96Mb of memory to Windows. (Confused yet?)
Does this automatically mean there is a problem with my DIMM? I believe there was an update for the rmm.pdr file for Win95 but I'm assuming that Win98 corrected this problem. Is there something I'm not setting correctly in my BIOS? (Most of my settings are default/automatic) Is there something I can do to use the full 128Mb of memory?
Thanks in advance.
