I'm running an XP machine.. specs are in sig.

I just replaced my PNY GeForce 128mb with a BFG 6800GTOC 256mb. After installing the new one, I downloaded the latest Force Ware drivers from Nvidia.

Works great in Half Life 2, but Far Cry has random textues such as walls or floors that pop up as plain blue or black.

Also, when playing video in Windows Media Player (Quiktime is Ok), the video appears very washed out, high contrast with poor quality...

Any ideas...

Here's what I'm running:

Northwood 3.2 - OC to 3.6
1 gig Corsair XMS
Aspire X-Dreamer II Case
PNY GeForce 6800 128mb
74gig Raptor SATA
200gig Caviar SATA
Audigy 2 ZS

there are some known video issues with the 77.72s. unless you are running BF2, try another driver set. The 76.44 or 76.45 WHQLs are pretty solid. The 76.50s are good also, but they are not WHQL (if you care about that).

look at the beta drivers section:

I went and installed 77.50, it seems to be working great. I'm going to try the games later..

Also, the GPU temp idles around 62-63 C. Does this seem a bit high due to the fact that the card has a copper heat pipe and dual fan setup?

the temps are slightly high. normally, they should be idling in the mid 50s. it depends on your case temp too. make sure there is nothing obstructing airflow to the video card.

Case temp is 90F right now according to the front panel... it got hotter overall after putting this new card in..

I had an Arctic cooling unit on my 128mb 6800 which helped keep some warm air out of the case as welll...

the other thing is that it is preoverclocked. you can try underclocking the 2d speed to 350 instead of 370.

if that doesn't work, you could always open your case. that always seems to drop the temps somewhat.

That Idle does seem a little bit on the high side.

Yea its REALLY weird.. I emailed BFG and got this:

"Thank you for your request. Normal operating temps vary from 40-70 degrees but our cards are guaranteed up to 120 degrees. Your card should be fine.

Thanks,"

Whatever.. with a lifetime warranty.. let it run warm I guess...

the card would heat throttle long before you hit 120C.

I actually just cut out some of the perforated sheet metal on my 2 80mm intake fans and 120mm exhaust and decreased my overall case temp by a few degrees.

Just as a reference, the two fans on the GeForce suck air in from the case and blow it onto the copper heat pipe / heat sinks. IS this correct?

yeah, most heatsink combos will pull air and blow over the heatsink.
