I have an existing wired netgear RP114 router, my cable I ran down to the living room from the cable modem which is in the bedroom, seems to have been damaged as I keep loosing my connection.

However if I take my laptop ( that's the one I want to use downstairs) up to the router and plug it into the router with another cable it never fails , so I reckon the cable to the downstairs is kaput. I got it secondhand for free anyhow.

I am with telewest 1mb connection in the uk, I run windows xp. The cable modem is a surfboard, not sure of the model.

Anyhow I want to replace the cable but I want to make sure I get the correct type, so could you please look at this link and advise me if this is ok and wont slow the internet connection,,,

Why Ebay? With shipping it may be more than one from a store.

Yes, the cable is correct. there are two major types - "patch" and "crossover". Patch is what you need.

As far as slowing your connection down, cable and DSL use less than 1/20th of available Ethernet bandwidth.

Thank you for the reply BipolarBill, ebay, I just used it as a search for the type of cable I need, I will also check out the local stores for costs for a 15m cable.

thx...rob

Patch cable has become an all encompassing term however technically it connects a switch or hub to a patch panel in a wiring closet. What the term has become is any cable connecting two network ports or a port and patch panel port. The two types, at least for this discussion, are straight through or Crossover (X-over) Either could be "patch" cables. For your needs you'll probably want a cable terminated as a straight through.
