how would you go about finding the name and contact info of a site owner?

I presume you're talking about WHOIS lookups.

It's going to depend on the body for that domain (i.e. .com, .net etc), I would imagine.

For .co.uk (Nominet) you have the option to not include your personal details in the WHOIS information. That's ONLY if you register as an individual though. If you're a business or whatever you need to provide some information.

Provided you're registered as an individual, you can change your preferences whenever you like by going to your account on whatever registrar sold you the name.

i don't want people contacting me at home

my home phone and email has been getting flooded with customers asking for deals on items for sale, asking for sponsorships, asking for free items, etc etc because they looked up my info using whois rather than emailing the business email listed on the site

Many services offer to register the site in their name instead of yours for a small fee. GoDaddy uses a service that I use to protect my identity. I'm not sure of others, but I'm informed that they do exist. You might try checking around.

Plus, you can always edit your details once the site is registered. For example, putting the business email and business phone number in the whois info.

(And why not register with these details anyway, if they're legit and so on, then what would be the problem?)
