Hello everyone. My brother just gave me a new motherboard (his old one,) the Asus A7N8X-Deluxe and a 512MB stick of PC2100 RAM to go with it. So i set it up with that memory and the memory that i had from my now old computer. Both of them are 256MB PC2100 RAM as well. So I put those 2 in the blue slots and the 512 stick the black slot. Press the power button, and nothing, wont even post. After some trial and error i discovered that if any RAM was in on of the 2 blue slots, it wouldnt post at all. I know that all my RAM sticks work because if i any of them in the black slot, everything posts. So, whats going on that i cant use all 3 memory slots and only just one? Thanks in advance for any help!
Specs:
A7N8X-Deluxe
AMD Athlon 1700+
1 stick PC2100 - 512MB
2 sticks PC2100 - 256MB

ok, i did a little more messing around and i discovered that everything will work if i put one stick in the black slot, and one stick in the middle blue slot, but if i go to the third slot, i get this vocal message "system memory failure" or something. any ideas as to why i cant put the 3rd stick in the 3rd slot?

It sounds like at least one stick is not compatible. Run with just 2 sticks in and sell the 3rd on ebay.

thats what i originally thought as well, but when i was messing around with different combinations of the memory in, every stick worked, its just that if i put anything in the 3rd slot, with the other 2 used, i fail the memory test..

danthemanohhyea-
You did not give us the specs of the system? Maybe some of the other components might cause the whole thing to be running in a marginal manner! PSU power rating? How many devices drawing power all at the same time? What things have you got hooked up? Please post all of the components involved so that we could have a clearer picture of your situation!
Have you tried testing each stick of memory on all of the memory socket positions one at a time? Give that a try to see if it can only post on all or some of the DIMM sockets. One stick at a time!

Specs:
asus a7n8x-deluxe
amd athlon xp 1700+
2x256 PC2100 kingston valueRAM (1 stick has chips on one side, the other has chips on both sides)
1x512 PC2100 unknown brand (samsung chips)
400 Watt dynex Power Supply
GeForce 4 Ti-4200 w/ 8x AGP
Western Digital 120GB hard drive
hp dvd burner
lite-on cdrw/dvd combo drive
iomega zip drive
3.5" floppy drive
1x 80mm fan
1x 120mm fan
USB things: apple pro keyboard, microsoft explorer mouse, CF card reader
(I think thats EVERYTHING i have connected)
In response to what lptech said, i did try every stick in every slot, seems as though if i put any stick in the first (black) slot, it works, if i put any stick in the middle (blue) slot, it works, but if i put any stick in the third (blue) slot the system wont post.
Also, if i put any stick in the first (black) slot, and any stick in the middle (blue) slot, it will post, but if i put any stick in the first (black) slot, and any stick in the third (blue) slot, it wont post, and if i put any stick in the middle (blue) and third (blue) slots, it wont post.
I came to the conclusion that if i put anything in the third (blue) slot, the system will not post.

alright, i pulled the memory out of my neighbor's computer, the 2 sticks are identical and were running in dual channel. I put them in the blue slots and nothing in the black, and it wouldnt post.
I dont understand whats going on!

clean the slot contacts with some alcohol on a cotton swab stick & make sure they're all aligned evenly.
oh - and you have a very trusting neighbour.
