I have a compaq presario 5000, it has a AMD 700mhz processor, 64 mb ram installed. It came preloaded with windowsME wich i heard ME isnt too good, was wondering if this computer will handle windowsXP or is it too small and slow?
thanks!

it will be slow and then go slower once you start installin other softwares like office, etc.

I did disable all eye candy stuff on it.

Add some ram to it.....like another stick of 64 or 128.

My experiences are 128mb ram will still be slooow , 256 would be exceptable , 512 is best.

will this computer hold 512 mb of ram? If so, how much is it?

mopower440-

Do you know the specs on the motherboard? If it has 2 or 3 DIMM sockets for the memory? What chipset it uses? Slot A or Socket A for the CPU interface? These are factors that would affect your upgrade path!

You might need to update or upgrade your BIOS in some case since companies like Compaq, Dell and HP all have proprietary BIOSes and might not work with Windows XP when you try to load it as your OS.

I would agree that 512MB is best if you decide to upgrade the RAM to run Windows XP.

ME is fine if tweaked right.

Any newer O/S, 98 and ME included will not run the best with 64MB, especially in conjunction with a pokey RPM HD.

That link should get your specs for you. D/L and install it then run it.

XP, as stated, will not be a good idea w/o some major upgrades.

W2K would be a better choice and even that will benefit from 64 to 128 MB more RAM. It will run with 64 but not well.

Your board, at that age, should hold 256MB without to much trouble.
