I may be looking for a new har drive in the near future. I currently have a Samsung 3.4G drive and have had for about 2 years with no problems until recently. Anyway I am doing some research and just would like some user info. So my question is, which is the best all around manufacturer of hard drives. The 3 currently concerned with are
Maxtor, Samsung and Western Digital. Opinions welcome but please don't tell me one hard drive is the best because you just bought yours. I am wondering about 6.4G and up and please tell me why. I heard that Maxtor runs a bit hot, any truth? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

A good place to start is SysOpt's User Reviews section http://www.sysopt.com/userreviews/index.html
Western Digital is virtually the same as IBM but less expensive. I posted that I saw a review that stated a Maxtor 20 gig 7200 rpm drive tested against other similar size and rpm drives ran hotter. I have no idea if that applies to smaller drives at the same rpm from Maxtor.

Yes, Maxtor 7200 rpm drives do run warm. I have one. I solved that by placing two heat sinks that I had in a box on top of the drive and attached them with heat sink paste. I also removed the 3.5 drive cover on the case to let air go across the drive. I can't give you exact figures, but there was a very noticable difference in the temp. (by feel) of the drive.... If you could use it, I'll send you a pic. of the setup.....

Im planning to get one between 13 and 20 MB's in the near future..Im taking a serious look at the GXP series of IBM. Even though they are a bit more expensive than the GP, they run at 7200 RPM, and have every good feature people look for in HDD's (2MB cache, 7200 RPM, ATA/66)
Just 3 letters: IBM
No matter what the others say, it is the best HD manufacturer.
Follow AuraEdge advice: buy an IBM 22Gxp. They come in differnet sizes: 9.1, 13.5, 18 and 22Gb. They all spin @ 7200rpm and have a 2Mb cache.
I have 2 IBM 22Gxp 9.1Gb set up in a RAID0 array... they fly !!!!
Now, if you can afford it, go for the 34Gxp series.

IBM isn't the best in all performance areas but an accross the board average puts them at the top. I would have to say that IBM is the way to go.
MWave has good prices but if you are only ordering a HD then you may want to check with eCOST or OnSale for the bottom line.
