I posted this message on the tech support forum. No takers over there so I thought I would try it here.
My computer recently started crashing on me. Here's a run-down of what happens. ANY thoughts would be appreciated.
At first, the computer would not boot on occasion. The hard drive light was on, fans running, etc. but would not load windows. Had to push in the on/off switch for four seconds to shut down and re-boot.
Now, the system will crash even when it is up and running. This just started happening a few days ago. I'm a big gamer, but it crashes even when I'm just surfing the web. It crashes to a blue screen that says "Hardware Malfunction", "Call your hardware vendor for support" and "The system has halted".
It seems to get worse the longer the system is on.
Here's my system.....
Soyo KT400 Dragon Ultra MB (about 9 months old)
Athlon 2600XP Mobile processor
Corsair Value Select memory 333mhz (2x512mb=1gb)
XFX GeForce 6600GT video card
Thermaltake Silent Boost CPU fan
S.B Audigy sound card
500 watt Power Supply (Only about 2 months old)
I have the processor running at the same speed as the memory to try and eliminate compatability issues, so it is running at 166fsb with a multiplier of 12 = 1996mhz, vcore of 1.575. I have moved the voltage down from 1.7 when I first had this problem. Running at 47degrees C according to Motherboard Monitor. I never could get the processor to overclock the way it was supposed to. The stock mutliplyer for the Mobile Athlon is 15 but I could never get mine to go above 12.5. Hmmmm.
I took out the video card last night and replaced it with my old GeForce 3 ti200. Same problem so I guess that rules out the video.
I'm thinking maybe its the MB. or maybe the RAM.
Built this system two or so months ago and it has run great up until a few days ago.
Any thoughts??
If anyone does think that it is the Motherboard, the next question will be what board do you recommend that I replace this with that is Bios friendly (overclocking) and a Socket A?
Thanks for your help
