Keep having this naging problem and have been trying to figure out how to keep my sytem resources from running so low. It's really bad when I am on the internet and editing my web page. Starts running really slow and system resources drop into the 57% range?????Also here this really high piched sound while running graphic intense screens or ALOT of apps.??? Tried the [vcache] lines Min/Max etc. it still seems to run very low. The only things I have running are:
Explorer
Point32:assume for Intel Mouse
Mswheel: " "
Starter
Wmexe: sound device mixer(can't seem to disable it even under msconfig it still enables itself)
pc runs very slow under heavy apps. esp. on internet....
system:
pentium II 350
8 gig Maxtor HD
128 megs of SDRAM(PC100)
Diamond Viper770 Ultra
here are my autoexec and config files: Maybe might be of some use???

Is the sound coming from your case or your external speakers? If it's coming from your case,it could be your PS transformer,or,the button speaker on your modem card.

Well, it's a really high pitched sound. Not really loud but anoying. Also, HELP, what the heck is going on with my system resources. ANYONE? sitting here online doing NOTHING and it's at 66%! Something is killing my machine. I don't have anything running but the basics listed above.

Sweeper,
If you are running Win98 run the MSCONFIG program and click on the "startup" tab. from there you can see what programs are automatically running at startup. I bet you have quite a few programs running. You should uncheck those items that you dont need running.....YOU DO NEED to leave running 1.scan registery, 2. sys tray, 3.loadpowerprofile (both instuances) and anything else you cant leave with out. BTW if you run Adobe photoshopm you need to leave "gamma loader" enabled for startup.

Let me know how you make out!

mntsnow - ive seen lots of people that say you need only have explorer, and systray running, like when you hit ctrl, alt, del. however, in msconfig, ive unchecked systray, and the power profile, and been running that way for over a year with no problems resulting from disabling them. i dont think that they are necessary - from my experience anyways...

Dr.
As for systray I'm not totally sure what happens when you disable it but I belive you lose the ability to shutdown processes by hitting the ctrl-alt-del keys....Not sure though as I have always left systray enabled...

no - ive had systray disabled, and i can still shutdown/restart using ctrl-alt-del. i cant really figure out what purpose it serves.....

Hmmmm....What do you have down in the "tray" down where the clock is? Maybe it just those icons?

Well....Then I'm stumped on what "systray" does then....Maybe I can disable it too!

Dr.Death, When you disable Powerprofiles you can not have your system "go to sleep" or powerdown harddrives according to time limits...If you want to run full bore all the time then by all means turn them off....

Sweeper, you are losing alot of resources to the Ensoniqmixer, Pointer and rmmon
try disabling them and restarting. see if you can live without them.

Sweeper,

Any success in getting your resources to stabilize?

sweeper ....

judging from your startup programs that you listed, i'd be willing to bet that you are using a winmodem in your system. you will notice a relatively good hit on system resources and performance when you sign on line because these modems consume a lot of overhead from your system's processor as they do not have onboard UART chip. my best recomendation is to try a different modem in your system and see if that makes a difference.

I had a feeling it might have been the winmodem. Have heard that somewhere before. But I am in the process of getting a 450 Pentium III right now so, the modem might have to hold for a few. Thanks for the info.
And it's still dropping , esp. online. But offline I can game till I fall asleep and have no problems. Must be that modem. Oh well. Will fix that too. /forum/smile.gif

Sweeper, When you get around to a new modem get a external USB.

Saves a slot an you can watch all the blinky lites and see your connection an download.
