Everytime I try installing it I get the error C:\Dos\_ins5617._mp is corrupt, try reinstalling the file and try again. I checked my dos folder and there's no such file. I enabled to view all files and it's still not there. I've had no problem installing it before but now it won't. I've formatted my drive 3 times and it still gives that error message. I tried powerquest but they weren't any help.

That file you are having problems with appears to be on the media you are installing from. Is your system overclocked?

No it's not overclocked.

well..you have win98 and you don't need a dos file...so if you can't find the problem file by running find..delete the dos folder and do the reinstall...you could also upgrade for free to 4.01 which gets rid of a number of issues with the earlier versions...you should also be getting an error message number when the problem happens.

Well I deleted the dos folder and now instead of C:\dos\_ins5617._mp it says C:\Windows\_ins5176._mp
It's also giving error 105 which is something about a bad partition. It also gives this error too.

I've ran Norton Disk Doctor, and scandisk and it found nothing wrong with the partition table.

here's the official info
Error 105 Partition starts on wrong boundary
The hard-disk partition table contains erroneous values. PartitionMagic expects FAT, NTFS, and HPFS partitions to begin and end on the boundaries used by FDISK. If they do not, the disk may be partially corrupted. In this
circumstance, if PartitionMagic were to make any modifications it might cause loss of data. Therefore, PartitionMagic will refuse to recognize any of the hard disk’s partitions. A Partinfo will reveal exactly which partition is having the problem and may
help PowerQuest Technical Support find an answer.

I ran that and it said that the os reported 95 cylinders and there's 96.

Sorry man, I hope you haven't loaded a lot onto the disk. Looks like you have to reset the HD in the bios, fdisk and start again.

Well my hard drive runs off a controller card, so could that have anything to do with it? I got the latest driver for the card and that didn't solve anything.

Maybe it's time for more info..why the controller card? what mobo do u have?
does your bios support large HD's, LBA?
did all work before or after the update?
does bios show the HD and it's parameters correctly?
just trying to help....

Hi there...when it was working before did you install the controller into a working system?
Seeing as you are a a clean start use your start up floppy and fdisk/MBR the do a sys c:
and see what happens. For install purposes you also might want to run it without the card and install it after. I think the site has workarounds if you do it that way.
Let me know

AMD K6-3 450
W.D. 18gig Expert 7200rpm ATA/66
Epox MVP3G-M
Promise Controller ATA/66
Creative 48x cdrom
Voodoo3 3000
The controller card is so I can use the full 66 on the hard drive. The motherboard supports larger drives. It worked last week and I was able to install partition magic. My computer screwed up and wouldn't boot into windows so I had to re-format the drive and start over. That's when it wouldn't install partition magic. The motherboard doesn't let me setup parameters for the hard drive. The controller card controls all of that. It recognizes the card and hard drive when I boot up and shows it as Mode4 which is how it's suppose to be setup. I ran diagnostics on the hard drive and it found nothing wrong. I also tried installing ez-drive and it wouldn't install. It recognizes everything like it did before, it just won't let me install partition magic. I tried installing win3.1 instead of dos and it installed but once I rebooted it just sat there. I finally got into a command prompt and typed C: and it said invalid drive. I found out that win3.1 won't recognize the hard drive attached to the controller card, but Win98 will. I formatted again last night and tried using my startup disk and had it start with cdrom support and tried installing win98 from that but it got as far as scanning system registry and stopped. I have both the dos and win3.1 disks and have always got it to work without installing dos but now it won't. I did it like that because I had converted to fat32 before I formatted and once I formatted, I went to fdisk and it showed the entire drive on partition 1. I'm only wanting to use one partition.

Well???...what happened?
jeffgordon24

I did it but nothing happened. When I type sys C: it said copied system or something like that. It worked before with my controller card installed and I tried installing it on my other system that doesn't have a controller and it wouldn't install either. I kept getting the same error message. I'm thinking the media is bad, but I really don't want to go out and buy it again. It was a gift to me 6 months ago and I don't have the receipt or any proof it was bought, so I doubt powerquest would exchange it for another one. I formatted the drive the other day, and it still says the same error messages so I'm not sure what else to do. I asked powerquest about it over a week ago and haven't heard anything about it. I made a backup copy of it on a zip disk, just in case the cd got scratched, and tried that and it did the same thing. Would there be another program I could use that could do the same thing? Preferably one that's free? Stores aren't real good about refunding your money on open boxed software where I live and like I said, I really don't want to buy it again or another program that does the same thing for that matter. Whenever I did that fdisk/mbr, it just sat there a second and then went to the a: prompt again. I don't know that much about dos so I have no idea what that was suppose to do.
I did notice that when I try installing it, whenever it gave the C:\Dos error, it would put a file named ins4136.ini I think it was, in the Dos folder, and when I opened it, it was a configuration file for partition magic. It also did the same thing in the windows folder whenever I deleted the Dos folder.

Sorry to hear that..when running fdisk /mbr
it erases the master boot record to get rid of any errors in it. running sys c: transfers system files to your HD..in regard to the disc it may be the media..if you registered it..you should be able to get it replaced..you must have cards that came with it...most stores will replace defective software if you bring in the cd and papers that came with it..they just don't let you get something else..

Thanks for your help though. Will see if I can find the stuff that came with it.
